Theta Tau is the oldest and largest co-ed professional engineering fraternity nationwide. Since its founding, the Theta Tau National Fraternity has graduated over 40,000 engineering alumni, making Theta Tau one of the best alumni networks in the world for engineers.
In 1904 at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Theta Tau was founded by Erich J. Schrader, William M. Lewis, Elwin L. Vinal, Isaac B. Hanks. These four were mining students at the time who founded Theta Tau under the name the “Society of Hammer and Tongs.” The Fraternity’s crest was created in 1911, after the chartering of the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma chapters, and has remained the same ever since. It was determined at that time that Theta Tau would adopt the core values of Service, Brotherhood, and Professionalism, and since then the fraternity has stood as a pillar for each of those essential aspects of fraternal fellowship.
The crest of Theta Tau, designed in 1906, embodies the principles of Service, Brotherhood, and Professionalism. Each element of the crest symbolizes the values and traditions that unite our members and inspire excellence in engineering and leadership.
Featuring iconic elements like the hammer and tongs, the crest is a timeless representation of our dedication to innovation, fellowship, and integrity. It serves as a reminder of our shared purpose and the enduring legacy of Theta Tau.
Theta Tau is committed to community service, consistently engaging in meaningful initiatives that benefit the local communities here in Binghamton.
These efforts foster a spirit of giving and compassion that has a lasting effect on our members.
Through volunteer work, fundraising, and outreach programs, we strive to make a positive impact that extends far beyond our fraternity.
We are dedicated to fostering professionalism among our members, providing opportunities for leadership development, networking, and skill enhancement.
Our chapter emphasizes career growth through workshops, mentorship, and professional events that prepare our brothers for success in the engineering field.
At Theta Tau Nu Gamma, we have a strong commitment to cultivating a strong sense of brotherhood.
Creating a supportive and inclusive community where members build lifelong friendships is one of our top priorities.
Through brotherhood events, chapter traditions, and mutual support, our fraternity fosters an unbreakable bond that extends through college life and beyond.
Founded in 2003, Nu Gamma Chapter of Theta Tau is the only professional fraternity in Binghamton specifically for engineering majors. With over 300 actives and alumni, members in the Nu Gamma chapter hold countless leadership roles on campus, in clubs, and in positions that they will eventually hold post-graduation.
Furthermore, being established for more than 20 years, this chapter has become a pillar for Engineers in areas of academics, fundraising, community service, and brotherhood. Over just the past year, our chapter has raised over $3,700 for Pediatric AIDS through the Greek God fundraiser, volunteered in several soup kitchens and Binghamton clean ups, and hosted various professional development events, all while becoming even closer as a fraternity. As we continue to grow and evolve, Nu Gamma remains dedicated to fostering a supportive community that not only excels academically and professionally but also makes a lasting positive impact both on campus and beyond.
The wide range of creative minds in Theta Tau Nu Gamma provide a unique opportunity for different types of engineers to bond and create innovative ideas that have a deep influence on the Binghamton community. Brothers in the Nu Gamma chapter have gone to work in companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Regeneron and so much more. With a tightly knit, expansive alumni network, Theta Tau clearly has a huge influence on all of its brothers, sculpting engineers that truly learn how to execute tasks “with all their might.”
